The arrival of the da Vinci Xi surgical robot at Surrey Memorial Hospital marks an important step toward launching robotic-assisted surgery, bringing the people south of the Fraser one step closer to accessing advanced surgical care closer to home.
Delivered in early January, the advanced system has been unpacked and calibrated and will remain on site as clinical teams prepare for the next phase. Surgeon and clinical training will take place over the coming months.
Advancing care close to home
Once fully operational, the da Vinci Xi will anchor a new Regional Robotic Surgery Program at Surrey Memorial Hospital. The program will initially support ear, nose and throat (ENT) and thoracic (chest) surgeries. Specialties where the need is urgent and where robotic-assisted surgery can greatly improve precision, recovery times and patient outcomes.
Powered by community support
This achievement has been made possible by extraordinary community generosity. The campaign was kick-started at Surrey Hospitals Foundation’s 2025 Celebration of Care Gala, with gifts from Dr. Alice J. Bush and Don Murray and CCI Group. Momentum continued with leadership support from the Ritchie Family and, most recently, the overwhelming generosity of the community through the 2025 Red FM Gurpurab Radiothon.
Together, these efforts have helped move the campaign forward in under a year, bringing advanced surgical technology closer to patients living south of the Fraser.
We’re almost there
While the arrival of the robot is a significant step forward, the campaign is not yet complete. Additional fundraising is still needed for specialized instruments, simulation tools, and the equipment required to make the program fully operational.
