Donor support has brought critical cardiac care closer to home
Thanks to thousands of donors and champions across Surrey and the South Fraser region, Surrey Memorial Hospital is offering life-saving cardiac catheterization, known as cath labs, services closer to home.
Until now, patients experiencing heart attacks or requiring urgent heart procedures often had to travel to Vancouver or New Westminster. When every minute matters, the distance can be critical. The arrival of these cath labs to Surrey means faster treatment, shorter travel times and better outcomes for patients right here in our region.
This marks a major milestone in expanding cardiac care south of the Fraser, and it’s been made possible by record-breaking donor support.
What are cardiac catheterization labs?
Cath labs are specialized hospital suites where interventional cardiologists perform minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat heart conditions. Using advanced imaging technology, they can open blocked arteries, place stents, and restore blood flow often without the need for open-heart surgery.
To prepare for this new era of cardiac care, Surrey Memorial Hospital has assembled a team of specialists from across Canada and beyond.
