In celebration of Vaisakhi, we want to highlight the generosity of one of our most inspiring donors from the Sikh community.

Meet Mr. Thiara – a kind 87-year-old man who lives in Surrey, British Columbia. He is deeply devoted to his faith, Sikhism, which taught him the importance of helping those in need. Every day he works to honour the principles of Seva (selfless service) and Daan (charitable giving) that are at the heart of his faith. When he heard that the Surrey Hospitals Foundation was in need of funding to support health care in his community, he knew he had to take action.

Even at 87, Mr. Thiara is a model example that it’s never too late to make a difference. Since 2021 he has been rallying his friends and family, sharing his vision with them and inspiring them to join him in donating to the foundation. With his unwavering commitment and the support of his loved ones, he was able to raise over $100,000 for Surrey Memorial Hospital and the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre!

He chooses to support Surrey Hospitals Foundation because he knows it benefits the entire community and is not bound by any cultural barriers – everyone needs access to good health care. He believes that by helping others, he is fulfilling his duty. His generosity continues to touch the lives of countless individuals and will have a lasting impact on the community for years to come.

Through his perseverance, Mr. Thiara set an inspiring example for all of us. He is a great example that when you are dedicated, you can bring people together and make real change!

The following passage from the Guru Granth Sahib is Mr. Thiara’s philanthropic inspiration:

Nanak naam chardi kala, tere bhane sarbat da bhala

Nanak, with your name comes prosperity and with your blessing, peace for everyone

Tudh aage ardas hamari jee-o pind sab tera

I offer my prayer to you; my body and soul are all yours

Kaho Nanak sab teri vadai koi nau na jaane mera.

Nanak says, this is all your greatness; no one even knows my name

We thank Mr. Thiara for supporting life-changing healthcare in Surrey.

From all of us at Surrey Hospitals Foundation: Happy Vaisakhi!
