In this webinar, we will explore the infrastructure and personnel required to care for the mother-baby dyad during critical maternal illness. We will review the recent history of Surrey Memorial Hospital, specifically the evolution from a secondary obstetric centre to a tertiary obstetric centre, and how these infrastructure changes have culminated in the ability to provide specialized care at a time when families look to us to provide the very best. To preserve patient confidentiality, no specific case will be reviewed, rather we will walk through a theoretical patient journey, to highlight the specialized people and systems that have enabled SMH to become one of the two hospitals in the lower mainland that can care for these complex cases.

Kirsten is a practicing maternal fetal medicine specialist, who joined the Fraser Health Authority in 2012. A specialist in MFM is an obstetrician who has additional training in fetal diagnosis and the management of high risk pregnancies. After completing her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at UBC, Kirsten spent two years working as a locum OB in BC and the North West Territories, before pursuing her fellowship in MFM in Calgary. Since starting her practice in Fraser Health, Kirsten has developed a niche interest in managing medically complex pregnancies. Clinical interest in medically complex pregnancies has expanded into clinical research. Kirsten is a member of an interprovincial research group, evaluating national data on pregnancy outcomes in women with congenital heart disease. Kirsten is also the Fraser Health co-investigator of the Maternal Legacy Project, a CIHR-funded prospective research study, evaluating the maternal and infant gut microbiome. From this lens, Kirsten will discuss the management of critically ill pregnant women, and highlight local lessons learned from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
